A Message from the Chair
Each year, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council exists to do something both simple and essential: bring people together to better understand the forces shaping our community and our world in order to have an informed and engaged citizenry and deepened democracy. This past year affirmed the value of that work and the strength of the community that makes it possible.
With the leadership of an engaged board, committed members, partners and staff, the Council continued to grow as a trusted, nonpartisan forum connecting Los Angeles to the world with global ideas and global leadership. The Board sharpened our strategic focus, refreshed our positioning, and delivered programs that brought consequential voices into thoughtful dialogue with our community.
The Council welcomed an extraordinary range of leaders who helped illuminate the challenges and opportunities before us. Our programs featured Presidential cabinet-level speakers, a Fortune 15 CEO, Congressmembers, an Admiral who served as former Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and local leaders such as the Los Angeles Mayor, LA County District Attorney and our Los Angeles Police Chief. Their perspectives anchored substantive conversations on public safety, diplomacy, democracy, national security, and the global dynamics shaping life in Southern California.
Beyond our public programs, we expanded opportunities for members to engage with one another through smaller conversations, international consular corps engagements, and curated experiences such as SPACEX and a tour of The Broad Museum with Ms. Edye Broad. These experiences encourage sustained civic dialogue and connection. Our international trips to Panama, Taiwan and Washington, DC were illuminating and thought-provoking. These gatherings underscore the Council’s distinctive role as a forum where ideas are exchanged rigorously, with respect, and with intellectual curiosity.
Equally important is our investment in the future. The continued growth of our high school and young professionals’ programs reflects the Council’s commitment to preparing the next generation for leadership. By exposing students and early-career professionals to international affairs and diverse perspectives, we are helping build the skills, curiosity, and civic responsibility that a strong democracy requires.
The Council now enters its next phase with clarity of purpose and growing ambition. Our programming will continue to reflect Los Angeles’ vital role as a global crossroads, with conversations focused on journalism and democracy; artificial intelligence and technology; international trade; and the intersection of sports and global engagement as the city prepares for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Central to this work is the continued development of the World Prize Gala. This signature initiative reflects the Council’s growing stature and its commitment to honoring leadership, ideas, and global impact. The inaugural event was exquisitely produced, received rave reviews and was a financial success. The Gala will continue to strengthen our financial foundation while supporting the programs that define our mission and extend our reach.
At the Gala, we premiered a powerful new video that celebrates the history of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council while building excitement for the future. I encourage you to take a look by clicking on the link below.
This important work depends on an engaged community. I invite you to renew your membership, to consider becoming more involved, and to encourage others to join us as members, sponsors, or partners in this vital civic enterprise.
I wish you a New Year full of joy, possibility and new learnings,

The Honorable Maria Contreras-Sweet
Chair, Los Angeles World Affairs Council

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Los Angeles World Affairs Council High School Program brought thought provoking programs to high school students across Los Angeles County, providing firsthand insights into critical thinking, global diplomacy, technology, and free expression.
Kicking off in January, Wanted: Critical Thinkers to Solve 21st Century Problems challenged students to apply analytical skills to real-world social issues, featuring experts from design, law, space science, and education.
In April, students explored the societal impact of artificial intelligence, discussing ethics, bias, and policy in shaping the technology-driven future.
September’s Diplomacy in Practice offered an inside look at international relations through a panel with the Consuls General of the United Kingdom, Kenya, and Romania, highlighting trade, climate initiatives, and cultural exchange.
Closing the year in December, The Future of the First Amendment examined the challenges facing free speech today, with journalists and media experts guiding students through issues of ethics, censorship, and civic responsibility.
Across all programs, students engaged directly with leaders, asked questions, and explored the skills and knowledge needed to shape a complex, interconnected world.
This year, the Young Professionals program continued to provide emerging leaders in Los Angeles with opportunities to connect, learn, and engage with global issues in meaningful ways.
Throughout 2025, the program offered a mix of educational events and social gatherings, fostering both professional growth and thoughtful discussion. Highlights included an evening program, “Split Screen: China vs. Hollywood,” featuring Wall Street Journal reporter and author Erich Schwartzel, moderated by Daniel Cox, where attendees explored Hollywood’s global influence and China’s growing role in the entertainment industry
The program also brought early-career leaders together through a welcome mixer, a fall gathering, and a holiday event, giving members the chance to connect, share ideas, and build community in a relaxed setting. By blending meaningful discussions with social opportunities, the Young Professionals program helps inspire and develop the next generation of engaged, globally minded leaders in Los Angeles.
TRAVEL PROGRAM
The Council’s 2025 Travel Program offered members unparalleled access to global perspectives through immersive, curated delegations.
In May, a delegation traveled to Washington, D.C., engaging with senior officials, think tanks, embassies, and Congress while exploring U.S. foreign policy, trade, regional security, and public administration. Cultural visits included the Capitol, White House, memorials, and Arlington National Cemetery.
In October, members traveled to Taiwan to deepen their understanding of U.S.–Taiwan relations and the island’s strategic, economic, and cultural significance. Delegates met with government officials, NGOs, and corporations, while also experiencing Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage through visits to the Atayal indigenous community, Sun Moon Lake, and historic sites across Taipei and Chiayi.
The trip also included a special dinner for the delegation hosted by Board member Danny Chen, creating a meaningful opportunity to connect. Serving as delegation leader, board member Yesenia Monsour represented the Los Angeles World Affairs Council throughout the trip, introducing the Council and its mission at briefings, welcoming speakers, and presenting gifts on behalf of the delegation. She also took the time to connect personally with delegates and members, and closed the program by thanking the tour guide and operator for their work.
These programs provide unique insights, foster cross-cultural understanding, and reinforce the Council’s mission of developing informed, civically engaged leaders in Los Angeles.
